How does your garden grow?

I live with my brat in a high rise flat

So how in the world would I know?

memoirs from mommyville mas memoirs How does your garden grow? That’s more like it.  That second one is courtesy of Roald Dahl’s Rhyme Stew and though I would never refer to my kids as brats, oh no, not me, I can’t grow a thing!

I love flowers, I do.

I love gardens.

I love herbs.

I love all things outdoors this time of year.

I wish, I study, I pine, and I want my own garden.

I spend hours at the nursery sighing over all the things I’d like to do with my yard.  memoirs from mommyville mas memoirs How does your garden grow?

Then…I leave…empty handed.

Why you may ask?

Because I love the flowers.

I do.

And that’s why I know they’re better off at the nursery.

Someone who won’t kill them.

This season, I have allowed myself a few small, tiny, uh, let’s call them side dishes…

I bought some herbs and some fruits…

I know I know, it’s not right…to the plants I mean, but they’re pretty low maintenance and I’ve only almost killed them once.

Now I didn’t allow myself to actually plant them.

But they’re hanging in there on my deck.

Want to see?

You know I’m going to show you anyway…

Take a gander at these bad boys!memoirs from mommyville mas memoirs How does your garden grow?

It’s my portable herb garden.

It came prearranged and it’s still alive!

It’s got basil, mint, thyme, oregano, rosemary and parsley!

Isn’t it cute?

And it’s saved me a bundle in not having to buy all those herbs at the market.

And it’s still alive!

Oh wait, I said that already.

Can you tell this is new for me?

My other little guy is this one… memoirs from mommyville mas memoirs How does your garden grow?

Isn’t he adorable?

He’s an alpine strawberry plant.

He’s just starting to flower and I can see the itty bitty tiny little buds forming.

I’m so excited I could burst.

Ok, truth be told, I almost killed this guy twice but he’s pretty resilient and seems to be still kicking.

memoirs from mommyville mas memoirs How does your garden grow?Love him!

Just thought I’d share a bit of my garden, or lack thereof, with you.  It’s sort of a confession for me.  Now you know where I get all my fresh herbs and my mom knows what a bitter disappointment I am in the garden.  She certainly did not pass on her green thumb…sorry ma, must not be hereditary.

What are you growing this year?

  1. My house was brand new when I moved in 3 summers ago, so I’m slowly expanding on my 6 Builder Bushes ;) I have herbs planted around my patio: tarragon, oregano, dill, cilantro, parsley, chives, sage, basil and rosemary. Down here, most of it will weather the winter! LOVE IT!

I’ve also got tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash eggplant and peppers out back. The beans, peas and lettuce didn’t do so well…too hot!

I posted pictures of my flowers today…great minds…

  2. You’re doing better than I am. We have way too much shade in our back yard to plant any form of garden so for fruits and veggies, I live vicariously through friends and pick your own places (and my good friend Trader Joe of course). They look like they’re doing pretty well under your green thumb!

  3. You’re doing great. I have a row of 12 herbs on my kitchen counter…just that cheers me up. Something about having that right there when I cook makes me feel so happy.

    What a simpleton, huh?

  4. your garden looks great. (And I love your hydrangea.) I haven’t tried herbs in my garden but we have lots of vegetables and I can’t wait until they are ready to harvest.

  5. You have more of a green thumb then I ever had. I now blame it on the Arizona summers, but come on.. I just can’t grown anything! lol

  6. This year is my first real attempt at square foot gardening and I LOVE IT! It’s so easy that I think anyone could do it – yes – even those who don’t think they can!

We’re growing: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, currants, sugar snap peas, green beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, cantalope, watermelon, cauliflower, carrots, lettuce, spinach, peppers, broccoli, zucchini and radish! And we have a teeny, tiny lemon tree :)

  7. I love the idea of a herb garden! I’m with you on the flowers, I only plant a few ,love they way they look but have a super hard time keeping them alive! I do have lots of hostas since they are super hard to kill!

  8. LOVE your garden…we have tomatoes this year, as this is our first attempt at growing anything! It’s actually going pretty good so far, lots of tomatoes and hopefully LOTS more nxt year! Visiting from welcome wednesday!

  9. the thing with gardening for me has been trial and error. I am so much better than I used to be. I still kill plants but most now survive and thrive. keep at it! You will improve and make your mama proud!

  10. My garden mostly grows weeds and crabgrass! But we try.

  11. You are so making me wish I was good with plants!

  12. I totally understand where you’re coming from! Not only am I certified in killing plants, but our backyard is a forest, so the plants I don’t kill, the deer nibble on. We have hydrangea bushes in our yard because I can’t really kill them (almost have, but I brought them back) and the deer don’t bother them. But, I ventured out this year and we’ve got a garden planted (that hubby waters, because I kill) and we’ve got a rasberry bush! There must be something about berries, because I’ve almost killed my plant, plus it gets nibbled on…but we discovered some little buds this week too!

  13. Love that you’re taking a risk. My gardens thrive on neglect. Or that’s what I tell myself these days.

  14. Mine doesn’t. I have a black thumb.

  15. I am lucky enough to have a husband who loves growing veggies and is really good at it. He learned from his parents. His mom also taught me a lot about flowers, etc.. so our yard is finally filled with tons of flowers, veggies and herbs! Keep it up! It gets easier I promise!

  16. I love gardening, but it’s my aunt that has a Southern-Living-esque Green Thumb! We are renting since we moved (waiting on that house to sell) – and it is driving me nuts not to plant something. And, I never feel at home unless I have perrenials that were in my grandmothers, aunts and MIL’s garden – it sounds crazy, but when their plants are growing around me, I feel at home!

I think your herb pot and strawberry plant look marvelous! I always kill my herb plant, though! Sigh!

  17. I love your little herb garden. I so do not have a green thumb. My grandparents have the most beautiful flowers surrounding their house and I always am in awe of their ability to grow such stunning plants. Then I wonder how it never rubbed off on me.

  18. I think that it is awesome that you are not killing plants!

My passion is growing tomatoes in small pots on my deck. I feel like a big no failer when it works. Me and dirt had a fight once. Wasn’t pretty. Pots are my friend.

  19. I kill things, too. I’d love an herb garden, though.

  20. That reminds me I have a plant looking really sad that needs water desperately. I should go and take some pictures for proof and blog about it someday. :) lol! A good Wordless Wednesday pic!

  21. Thank you so much for stopping by Crafts & Sutch! :) I’m following you back! I’m so excited you found me because I always love new recipe ideas!

  22. I’m terrible in the garden! I think it is because my skin is allergic to heat. I get all read and itchy. Not fun. I know…where did that come from? Thanks for stopping by and following! I’m now following back.

  23. Thanks for visiting my blog and I’m your newest follower :o )

  24. thanks for following me…I’m following you right back and can’t wait to hear about some great recipes that I can test out on my picky eaters!

  25. Wow! Your gardening looks beautiful! Thanks for visiting my blog. Im following you back from WW! Have a great week.

  26. I kill pretty much everything…I am working on doing in the tomatoes right now. I can grow what I can grow and that is about it…herbs…I do well with herbs too! I keep trying!

  27. Look at you growin stuff you are an inspiration! I love plants and gardens too but they don’t love me lol

  28. Love it and I’m your newest follower!

  29. Love your garden. I love the grasses on the first picture! It grew equally!

  30. I love the way you presented your garden. Its refreshing and totally not boring to read. Makes me want to read more. Anyway, since I had moved in back home, I will use my old garden space and plant the same veggies I had planted five years ago. Tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, green peas and some cauliflowers. Hope it does well. I will also try some herbs as I saw your herbs are growing fully well.
