You know that I’m a huge fan of mashed potatoes, well who isn’t, but I was shocked to hear from so many of your about how your kids wouldn’t try them.
WHAT????
What kid in their right mind would not want mashed potatoes and all that yummy creamy goodness?
Then I stopped to think for a second and I realized that for quite some time my boys wouldn’t try mashed potatoes?
WHAT????
How dare you scoff at a potato! A mashed potato!
You are Fitzpatricks for the love of all that is holy.
Your people have survived against all odds with the help of the magical pratties!
WHAT????
So I tried to remember how I got them to eat them for the first time, and I realized it’s the magical practice that I have leaned on time and time again…
I called the boys into the kitchen when those little beauties came out of the water and asked them to make them with me and decide what goes in them.
Now they are “their” mashed potatoes.
Now they take ownership and pride in their potatoes.
Now they will actually try them and realize that mashed potatoes are nothing but GOOD.
Here is Keegan’s recipe. Keep in mind that these measurements are an estimate. He got a little crazy with the parmesan cheese.
1 lb baby red potatoes, mashed (You could use any kind of potato, I just don’t like to peel them.)
2 T chicken stock
2 T cream
2 T sour cream
2 T unsalted butter
1/4 cup parmesan cheese (though something tells me Keegan threw in closer to a 1/2 cup, he kept saying, I think it needs more cheese, mommy.)
S&P
Toss all ingredients into a large bowl. Let the kids have fun mashing those potatoes! Mix well, let the kids get creative about what they’d like to add. Dish it out and let them enjoy trying their delicious masterpiece!

I don’t know why I never think to bring them in on the potato mashing experience. My kids are those kids that “don’t like mashed potatoes”. I personally can’t understand it either. I mean, really. what’s not to like about a pile of taters, butter, milk and cheese?
My 3 year old went through that stage last year. She however LOVES any kind of sauce or dip so after I gave her gravy for her pork chop and she loved it I added the mashed potatoes to her plate and said (in a very excited voice), “You have got to try it on mashed potatoes!” It made her excited to try and now she LOVES them, plain or with gravy!
It’s crazy, because my 8 year old son hates homemade mashed potatoes. I’ve tried letting him do the mashing but he still doesn’t like them. It drives me crazy. All he’ll touch is the Betty Crocker butter and herb, so we make them with tons of butter and I put in sour cream and chives, he won’t eat them. I make ours similar to yours, I’m hoping he grows out of this picky stage soon.
One of the few vegetables Princess Nagger loves is mashed potatoes – she does love being able to mash them herself, but I think I’ll let her do them Keegan’s way – I bet she’ll love them even more!
I use to love it when my mom would let me help her make dinner. It seemed that I was more apt to eat something if I helped
Keegan’s potatoes sound wonderful!!!
Sour cream and cheese … and potatoes … there is nothing but good in those words …
smart girl!!
I honestly had no idea that ANY child had to be cajoled into eating mashed potatoes. That is a real shocker!!! When I was a kid, I couldn’t keep away from those things!! That nice white mountain of mashed potato with the not-so-little crater in the top for my hunk of soft butter…sigh…nothing could be better!
Something is happening to America’s children. Is our drinking water being tampered with?
Looks like your boys had fun with their mashed potatoes after all.
What a great idea! Drake already loves mashed potatoes! Good thing since we live in a meat and potatoe kind of place!
Please tell me you gave them ingredients to choose from and didn’t just let them pick randomly from the pantry. Because the mashed potatoes in this house? Would have Lucky Charms and otter pops in them!
OMG, I could LIVE off of mashed potatoes. Actually, any kind of potatoes would do! It’s a great idea to have the kids participate in the prepping, because then they have pride in what they’ve done and will at least TRY them. YUM. Mmmn. SOOO good. Thanks for the recipe. I’ve never made mashed ones w/ baby red taters, we always tend to go for the old skool regular ones!
You’re right, nothing beats mashed potatoes…except steak with mashed potatoes! That’s a really good idea, to include the youngsters in the making.
Ooo! His mashed potatoes sound divine! I may have to try out his recipe. I might add a few green onions though.
my daughter loves to be the ‘masher’ too… she’s a big fan of garlic mashed potatoes…
Red potatoes make the best mashed potatoes.
sour cream and cheese, oh that’s perfect mashed taters….yum

I’ve finally convinced The Girl that mashed potatoes are the way to go, but The Boy is STILL not on board – whose kid is he anyway?!?!
I am shocked at the comments about not liking mashed potatoes!! My kids think it is gourmet. Maybe that comes from living in Idaho. Love Keegan’s recipe!! Sounds delicious! I would of added the extra parmesan too!!
We are trying those soon!
I can never remember a time that I have not loved mashed potatoes. I can eat a whole pan by myself.
That face is too freaking cute!!! They sound amazing as always my dear.
That’s a good idea. You guy’s recipe sounds pretty good. And the mashing may be the best part.

This recipe is basically what I put in my taters, too – so good! We throw whatever we have in there, including cream cheese on occasion. I’m usually only hungry for mashed potatoes in the winter, but now I’m craving them.
My oldest just started helping with the mashing process and finally ate mashed potatoes for the first time about three months ago. His only requirement now is that I don’t leave any “peelins” in there (I like to have some skin in my mashed potatoes – DOES NOT fly with the little man).
Kids are weird, period. There have been times when I think mine should love a certain food, and they act like I’m trying to poison them.
This is such a fun way to get kids to eat vegies & now your making me wonder how I came to love mashed taties… I clearly remember my brother & I practically coming to blows when it came to mashing them because we got to ‘do our own secret recipe’. Gee Wizz… so I wonder if my Mom …..?
