We’re still busy working away filming our television pilot so my girl, Shell, one of my favorite blogger on this planet, has graciously agreed to entertain you all in my absence. Shell came all the way over from her own super busy blog Things I Cant Say to hang out with me today. It’s kind of big deal. I liken it to sitting at the popular kids table in the cafeteria. I’m all aflutter. I hope milk doesn’t come out of my nose…I think I might have to change my outfit.
I am convinced that Alex and I live parallel lives. Our boys, experiences that we’ve had, even our personalities.
But, she is the more gifted in the kitchen. Me, I steal her recipes and she lets me pass them off as my own.
So, when she asked me to guest post over here, I felt a little intimidated, though always willing to help my twin out.
She told me not to worry, that I didn’t have to try to fill her shoes…which is good, since I can’t!
But, I did start thinking of summer treats and memories from my childhood.
You see, we didn’t have any sugar growing up. None. Like, not even plain Cheerios because there was one gram of sugar per serving.
But, we still wanted treats, just like any other kids. We saw other kids with popsicles and we wanted some, too.
So, Mom made her own.
Either we had fruit juice ones- as simple as it sounds- pour 100% fruit juice into popsicle molds or for a treat, we had orange cream ones.
Not the ones that you are thinking of, with the orange outside and the ice cream in the middle- but these are a healthy alternative.
You’re not exactly going to fool your kids into thinking that these are the same as those yummy treats….but you might luck out and have them like them anyway!
Combine 16oz yogurt (plain or vanilla- though my mom made her own) and 6oz of frozen orange juice concentrate. Stir well, pour into Popsicle molds, freeze, and there ya go!
What do you think, Ma/my twin? Are you going to try this?
What are your healthy treats for summer?

Shell, you rocked this! These sound delicious. I think my husband would love them. Um, if there are any left over when I get done with them.
No sugar? NO SUGAR?!?! My best friend also lived in such a household. She LOVED coming to my house, let me tell you! She ate non-stop!
Glad to see you over here! Both you and Alex are two of my faves!
I think this was a “mom of the 70′s/80′s” thing. My mom, as well as all of my friend’s mom’s had the Tupperware pop molds and used to make juice or “pudding” pops! They were yummy! I think, if you don’t have molds, you can use little paper cups.
My mom tried the no sugar thing too and also powdered milk However, my mom has a baby brother that’s just 10 years older than me. After 17 years and 6 kids, my grandma let a lot slide and eventually we figured out that Grammy milk (plastic carton) and Uncle Paul cereal (Cookie Crisp) were WAY better than what we got at home. We broke her down!
Seriously? Even I could do this…I think I’ll try it…just gotta get molds!
that sounds good to me! We just finished a bucket of sorbet. Although I will say it has a bit of sugar in it, it also has a bucket of fruit, so not too bad on the health side. Great guest post!
Hope it’s going well Alex!
Shell! This sounds great! I love freezing stuff for my kids too instead of just buying something made. Thanks for sharing!
OK, that sounds awesome. I am always looking for new ways to fool my kids. Generally we don’t eat a lot of “junk” (unlike my childhood – cocoa pebbles was a staple for breakfast) so they easily adapt to new (healthier) options.
haha, I loved how you introduced Shell, and by the way, I LOVE Shells blog. I’ve been following her for a while now. I agree, she is kind of a big deal, and so VERY popular
And Shell, I love that yogurt popsicle idea! Sounds sooo yummy!

Glad you all joined me here at the cool kids table with Shell. Isn’t she the best. I don’t know about you guys but I will totally be making these this weekend!

That sounds really good! A great treat for summer!

raising a child who can’t have sugar, recipes like this are of extreme interest to me. what a great summer treat!
Yum that sounds good! I used to like to freeze orange juice and eat those. So good!
I don’t have kids but I could fool my husband with this healthy sorbet for sure!
Ooooooooo, what an awesome idea!!! I’ve gotta try that, my kids will go bonkers! Thanks!
Okay – did you also have the tupperware popsicle molds?
When Otter was on a low carb diet for epilepsy, he couldn’t have sugar but needed lots of fat. I froze diet root beer and whipping cream into popsicle molds. They tasted like root beer floats and were quite yummy!
