Tasty Tidbit – Salt

New guidelines just announced say that Americans need to cut their salt intake.

Wow, that’s a news flash.

But they say that Americans over the age of 51 and all African-Americans should limit their salt intake to 1/2 a teaspoon daily.

That is not a lot of salt!

but have you ever added too much salt to a dish like soup or stew?

Want to make it less salty?

Here’s how…

Peel a potato, cut it into large chunks and toss it into the stew the last 10 minutes of cooking.  This will pull out some of the salt from your soup.  Remove the potato and serve.

Voila!

Tasty Tidbit – Bell Peppers

You all have heard in the past how I’m a dipper.

Yup, I love to dip.

Anything and everything.

And clearly it’s genetic as the boys are just like me.

And one thing they really really really love to dip.

Here’s a little fun fact that I learned not long ago…

You know how peppers have bumps on the bottom?

Well if it has 3 bumps it tends to be sweeter.

Perfect for eating raw and dipping.

If it has 4 bumps it will likely be a bit firmer and better for cooking with.

Ha!

Put that in your pipe and, uh, dip it!

Do you always get salt and pepper all over the counter when you fill your shakers?

Until I learned this neat little trick that is…

Cut a large corner off of an envelope.

Take that corner and poke a larger hole in the pointy end.

Stick the end into a shaker.

Fill.

It’s a funnel!

Toss a stalk of celery in the bag and close it back up.

If you put the celery in the bag when you bring it home from the store it will keep it from going stale even longer!
