Dancing the night away

Oh What A Night!

Remember that song?

Love that song!

But it accurately describes my sentiments on this past Monday night.

I went on down to the city to hang out with some of my favorite Mommy Bloggers at Swarovski Crystals in  NYC

Carla and Leos World of Dance is a delightful look at the history and origins of Ballroom Dance written by model and mom Agatha Relota.

Not to mention the amazing illustrations by Theirry Perez.

And the super sweet forward by Hottie Mom, Jessica Alba.

This book would inspire anyone to dance!

Even my boys!

And dance the kids did…

Well not mine, they were testing for their orange belts at karate…

Which they literally kicked some butt at!

Congrats boys!

BUT…

If they were there they’d have kicked up their heels for sure!

Like these cool kids!

The munchkins all had a blast mixing it up with ballroom dance pros.

And these two were awesome!  Have you seen them?

Tristan and Tyler are adorable standing there with the Moms and the City gals.

If you haven’t checked out Tristan and Tylers Tales from the City go and visit them.  It’s such a treat!

Back to Carla & Leo…

What a wonderful book!

And I got the chance to talk to Agatha, the beautiful and talented author.

She had a baby 7 months ago and let me tell ya…

She is looking hot…

And tall!

And she says it’s all thanks to dance.

I mean…check out those legs are her!

She is clearly one hell of a dancer!

As were these fantastic budding ballroom stars tripping the light fantastic.

But I was so glad to take a book home to the boys as I can’t wait to walk through the world of dance with them.

I mean other than Dancing with the Stars that is….

featured Dancing the night away

Carla and Leo cover it all…

From the Samba…

To the Viennese Waltz…

The Foxtrot…

To the Tango.

We get to learn the history of the dance and all about the places they come from.

Oh What A Night, indeed!

And learning all these dances may just lead to some more great nights!

Thanks again, Ladies!

Wordless/Wordfull Wednesday 8

This is one of those so not wordless ones…

Here’s Keegan…

We’re in NYC…

In Times Square…

At the New Amsterdam Theater…

At Keegan’s very first Broadway show…

mas memoirs Wordless/Wordfull Wednesday 8

Mary Poppins!

See this is kind of a big deal.

At least for me.

One of the reasons I’ve been so thrilled about moving back east is our close proximity to NYC…

and Broadway.

Why?

Well other than the obvious that I love me some show tunes.

But because this is sort of where I come from.

Well yes, NYC, but Broadway itself.

See my parents worked here.

Waaaaaaaaaaaay back in the day.

Yup, Ma and Dad were theater folk.

60′s and 70′s theater folk.

Hippy Theater Folk.

I think it may be cooler now than it was then…

Anyway, bringing Keegan here for his first taste of it was super special for me.  Sort of like showing him a bit of his family history.

First I took him to the Stage Deli.  I remember my dad taking me here once when my brother and I were kids.

mas memoirs Wordless/Wordfull Wednesday 8

We shared our chicken soup, corned beef sandwich and one hell of a knish.

Then, after hitting the biggest Toys-R-Us I have ever seen we walked back down about 10 blocks to catch the show.

Keegan was enthralled.  His eyes were big as saucers.  He loved clapping after the numbers finished and by the second act he was pretending to be a conductor.  He got such a kick out of Mary Poppins and her umbrella.  It really blew him away.  I cried.  Someone please tell me if these pregnancy hormones ever go away?  Maybe we should just rename them mommy hormones.

After the show Keegan and I jumped into one of those rickshaw pedi-cabs, as it started raining, and went down to restaurant row, which has come a real long way since the last time I was here!  Dad told me to take Keegan to that Broadway institution of Joe Allen.  We met my best friend, Stacey, and Keegan had a real grown up dinner with us.

mas memoirs Wordless/Wordfull Wednesday 8

All in all it was a great way to introduce Keegan to the theater and a piece of his family’s past.  It was also a great way to remind me how much I missed it.  So big thanks to Grandma Susan and Grandpa Jeff for sending us some tickets for this great show.  We really had a blast.

What’s your favorite Broadway musical?

Momofuku Noodle Bar

171 1st Ave
New York, NY

I’m so bad at the wordless thing.

I mean, have you met me?

I can’t shut up for a second.

Today’s picture is an ode to my birthday weekend in NYC with a picture of one of my favorite things on earth.

Momofuku’s steamed pork bun

memoirs from mommyville Wordless/full Wednesday 6

Martha Stewart herself said this was one of the best pork buns she’d ever had.

I assure  you it is.

No disrespect to my Ma who used to make steamed pork buns in our oven at home with roasted pork she brought home from the take out chinese place.  Thanks, Ma.  You’re the best.

But Momofuku’s?  OH EM GEE!  It’s incredible.

It’s light and fluffy and then it’s wrapped around a pork belly and some scallion, hoisin, cucumber goodness.

Not to mention the fact that you are sitting at an amazing noodle bar in the East Village about to eat some of the best ramen this side of the Pacific.

memoirs from mommyville Wordless/full Wednesday 6

If you’re ever in NYC I highly suggest you make the trek downtown for this little gem.  It’s so worth it.  Take a look at the menu…

memoirs from mommyville Wordless/full Wednesday 6

And here’s a tip for ya, it’s not on the menu but supposedly the fried chicken is the most amazing thing ever.  You have to order it like a month in advance as they only make a certain amount of portions a day.  They fry it in grapeseed oil and I have yet to try it.  I’ve heard it’s remarkable.  Oh, I love New York!

Do you have a restaurant that makes absolutely the best dish ever?  What is it?  Where is it?  Please share so we can all make a special trip too?

Closer to 40?!?

Go, Ma, it’s your birthday, we’re gonna party like it’s your birthday…

It is my birthday.

I can’t believe it.

I’m old…

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

Well, not there, that’s me young.

Now…not so much.

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

Usually I don’t mind the birthdays.  Especially the big ones…

25 was a great one, seemed to be chugging along quite well, mid-twenties were awesome.

30 was a breeze, I was feeling good, I was preggo with the first kid, all seemed to be going to plan.

35 was cool.  I can handle mid-thirties.  I’m a grown up, but I’m still fun.

It’s the random years I seem to have trouble with.

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

28 was the toughest one.  I panicked, I was late 20s.  I couldn’t imagine.  How could I, she who could party like a rock star, be almost dare I say, 30???

And today?

Today I’m closer to 40 than I am to 30.

OH EM GEE!!!!!!!

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

Today I am past “advanced maternal age” (though I don’t plan on doing that again!)  Today I am old enough to require blood pressure checks to take bcp’s.  Today feels like I am officially a grown up.

Today things don’t bounce back like they once did.  It used to be in order to lose 10 pounds I just needed to stop drinking beer for a week.  Now, if I have a beer I gain 10 pounds.  Not to mention the fact that if I have 1 beer too many I’m hungover for days.  I used to be able to drink til 4 in the morning and still make an 8 o’clock class in college.  ( AND Yes, I know that is so NOT cool, but I’m just trying to be descriptive here.)

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

A few weeks ago, I hurt my foot, and it’s been bugging me ever since, thus, I haven’t been to the gym in ages.  Many mornings I wake up and something actually hurts?  I ache.  Like an old person?  WTF?

Not to mention the fact that I used to be a very very smart girl.  Stop laughing…for real!  Now, I can’t even yell at the right kid without going through everyone else’s name first, including the dogs!

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

But don’t worry!  Really.  I’ll be fine.  I’m good.  You want to know why?

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

That’s it right there.  How can I not stay young chasing that crew around?  They make me smile, they make me laugh, they make me insane, but they certainly keep me young and happy.  And getting older means they are growing too, and I’m around to see it.  Around to share all those amazing memories as they discover who they are in life.

When those little faces burst into my room, at 6:30 am I might add, screaming

“Happy Birthday Mommy, let’s make a special birthday breakfast!”

How can you not be excited about your birthday?

So…

“Go, Ma, It’s your birthday, we’re gonna party like it’s your birthday!”

Oh, and it helps I’ll be in NYC this weekend celebrating with all my girlfriends too.  Gotta have a little girl time to celebrate being closer to 40 right?

mas memoirs Closer to 40?!?

Thanks for stopping by from the Friday Follows. Please leave me a note and I’ll get ya back!

Sol Y Sambra Tapas Bar and Restaurant – 462 Amsterdam NYC

mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentro

Translation?  It’s getting hot in here!!! Ma needs a drink!

Last weekend I hopped the train inbound to NYC to meet up with my best girl, Stacey and hit the streets for some cool street fairs, an awesome tapas lunch, and some drinks before we took in a matinee of Sex and The City 2.  I know, I know we should have been drinking cosmos but the mercury was rising and I was looking for some sweet summertime refreshment, enter the beloved Sangria!  Who could resist a pitcher of wine sweetened with brandy and fruit???  Uh, I’ll take two.

mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentroNow my absolute fave Spanish restaurant in the NYC is a place down in the village called Sevilla, on the corner of Charles and 4th.  But we were way uptown and had to catch a movie so we decided to hoof it to Calle Ocho which was much closer to Stacey’s apartment and we had heard, all the rage.  mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentroWe walked into Calle Ocho and it was like I had just entered a restaurant version of Studio 54.  Super trendy and way too crowded.  Nixed that idea and went outside and thought, hmmm, I’m in New York, I could throw a rock and hit about a thousand great eateries, let’s roll the dice…we ended up at Sol Y Sambra Tapas Bar and Restaurant, 462 Amsterdam if you’re in the area.  Awesome!  I loved it.  The staff was super sweet and totally accommodating of our lame requests to be sort of outside on the patio yet still inside near the a/c.  I’m totally high maintenance even without the kids in tow.  The food was well presented and oh so tasty.  I highly suggest you stop by.

Secondary to our sangria, we had some great tapas!  An amazing manchego cheese plate, an incredible baccala (salt cod) croquettes, a beautiful white asparagus salad, a delicious chorizo, and of course gambas al ajillo (garlic shrimp).  Uh, yes, we needed a wheelbarrow to get out the door afterwards but it was sooo worth it.  And we were walking all the way back home again which was 25 blocks or so. mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentro

I don’t know what they put in their sangria at Sol Y Sambra but it was delish.  I thought I’d give you the recipe for mine, also deserving of 5 stars if I do say so myself!

mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentroIngredients:

  • 1 Bottle of red wine (I suggest a Rioja but you could also use Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, or Shiraz)
  • 1 Lemon sliced
  • 1 Orange sliced
  • 1 Lime sliced
  • 1 Apple slice
  • 1 pear sliced
  • 1/4 cup  sugar
  • 1/4 cup  brandy
  • 2 T triple sec
  • 2 Cups ginger ale or club soda

mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentroCombine in a pitcher with ice or frozen grapes and berries, stir, pour and enjoy!  Did you know I used to be a bartender?  Well, I was.  It’s actually how I met the hubs.  Yup, I was slinging drinks in Beantown and he walked in one night.  That’s a story for a different day. mas memoirs Gimme Some Sangria consigue caliente aquí dentro So I used used to tend bar so lemme give you some variations on this one.  Don’t drink?  You could make this up with some grape juice or cran-grape cocktail instead of the wine?  Just leave out the brandy and triple sec.  What is your favorite summertime drink?  Whatever it is, get out with your girls and enjoy!  Ole!

Ok, personal bloggie side note…Can I get a woot-woot???  That’s right baby 200 followers.  I’m so excited.  Big shout outs to The Caffeinated Globe my very very special and near and dear to my heart 200th follower.  Who will be 300???  Hurry up, tell your friends!
